Elizabeth Taylor in the Cleopatra movie made a mark on the fashion world as well. Aubrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's was also influential in women's fashions of the era. The popular beach party series of movies gave rise to the bikini, from Beach Blanket Bingo to How to Stuff a Wild Bikini, the movies became part of early to mid-1960s pop culture.
The era of the hippie peace and love brings flower power' and bell bottom jeans and fringe suede jackets and love beads. Express yourself in a 1967 Summer of Love inspired vintage styles. Check out the hippie dresses which make great costumes. They are long or short, of favored fabrics like tie-dye, paisley, patchwork and batik. Along with the hip hugger blue jeans were halter tops and Mexican peasant blouses. The folk music revolution brought us the music icons Bob Dylan, Joan Baez and Joni Mitchell. Designer fashions of the era are also a source of inspiration for vintage costumes for theme parties as well as Halloween costumes.
Iconic movies included historical dramas such as Spartacus, with Kirk Douglas and Lawrence of Arabia with Peter O'Toole, classic musicals such as The Sound of Music, My Fair Lady and West Side Story. The latter part of the decade saw the rise of the spaghetti Western, A Fistful of Dollars and The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, as examples. Also "B movie" classics like Barbarella with Jane Fonda and "One Million Years B.C." with Raquel Welch.
With Sixties costumes there are so many options....you can juxtapose clothing styles, Beatnik meets Woodstock meets Mod! Tall go-go boots, fishnet stockings, the A-line mini-dress; remember that haute couture was revolutionary, bringing in the shorter hemlines that were quite shocking after the rather conservative decade of the Fifties and its demure below-the-knee skirts and dresses.
